Week 2 of the high school football season brings a full slate of Maury County teams back to the field Friday, Aug. 28, with one matchup starting a day early, and everybody carrying some Week 1 momentum, or motivation, into this weekend.
Columbia at Battle Creek
Columbia Central opens Week 2 off a solid 27-13 win over Dickson County, a comfortable enough margin that the Lions should carry real confidence into their trip to Battle Creek. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, come off one of the wilder games in the county last week, an overtime heartbreaker against Mt. Pleasant that finished 42-41. That kind of loss can go one of two ways for a team, and Friday night will tell you a lot about which way Battle Creek bounces.
BGA at Columbia Academy
BGA visits Columbia Academy in what should be one of the more lopsided matchups on paper, at least by Week 1 form. BGA rolled into its season opener with a 41-18 win over St. Michael Catholic out of Alabama, a nationally televised game that saw quarterback Bo Bryan, the son of country star Luke Bryan, throw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in his varsity debut. Columbia Academy will not be intimidated, though. The Bulldogs opened their own season with a one-point classic, edging Fayetteville 28-27, the kind of win that tends to build a team's belief heading into a tougher test.
Richland at Spring Hill
Richland travels to Spring Hill in a matchup of teams heading in opposite directions after Week 1. Richland ground out a tight 21-19 win over Wayne County, another one-score finish in a county full of them last week. Spring Hill, on the other hand, dropped its opener to Summit, 7-21, and will be looking to get back on track at home.
Zion Christian at Mt. Pleasant (Thursday)
Mt. Pleasant does not even wait for Friday. Fresh off that instant-classic overtime win against Battle Creek, the Tigers host Zion Christian on Thursday night instead of the usual Friday slot. Zion Christian is looking to bounce back after falling to King's Academy, 3-21, in Week 1, and will need a much better offensive showing to keep pace with a Mt. Pleasant team that just proved it can win the close ones.
