COLUMBIA, Columbia Fire and Rescue is accepting applications for its 2026 Citizens Fire Academy, a free program designed to give adult residents a genuine behind-the-scenes look at the fire service. The six-week academy runs from September 15 through October 20, with sessions held every Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at various Columbia fire stations. Applications are open now through September 4.
The program is more than a tour. Participants will take part in live fire equipment demonstrations, CPR training, and presentations from Columbia Fire and Rescue's Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, and Training divisions. A hands-on mock fire scene gives participants the chance to work with hose deployment, ladder operations, and search-and-rescue tactics under the guidance of department personnel. City Manager Tony Massey said the academy is an important opportunity to strengthen the connection between residents and the department that protects them.
Fire Chief Chris Cummins put it in practical terms. "Every day, our firefighters rely on training, teamwork and preparation to serve this community," Cummins said. "The Citizens Fire Academy gives residents the chance to experience some of that training firsthand and see what it takes to be a member of Columbia Fire and Rescue." For a department that depends heavily on public trust and community support, giving residents a direct look at the work is one of the most effective forms of engagement a fire service can offer.
The Citizens Fire Academy is open to adults 18 and older. There is no cost to participate. Interested residents can apply through the City of Columbia website or contact Columbia Fire and Rescue directly at 931-560-1700. With fewer than three weeks left before the September 4 application deadline, residents interested in attending this fall's class should plan to apply soon.
