SPRING HILL — Nicholas Herrud, a 2017 Columbia State Community College alumnus, has reflected on his journey from first-generation college student to Fulbright scholar pursuing doctoral studies at Notre Dame, according to the college. The Spring Hill native credits his time at Columbia State with laying the foundation for his academic and personal success.

Herrud emphasized the importance of mentorship and personal connections available at community colleges. "Success is not a path you walk alone," he said. "By showing me that you only get out of something what you put into it, especially in a class, even if you get an 'A,' it doesn't necessarily mean you get everything that that class has to offer." Herrud credited retired history professor Dr. James Senefeld with guiding him to explore new areas of study beyond initial expectations. His trajectory from Columbia State to university transfer to graduate work demonstrates the tangible impact of community college education in opening pathways for students and families new to higher education.
