COLUMBIA — The City of Columbia is moving forward with a comprehensive Pavement Management and Preservation Program, partnering with engineering firm Alfred Benesch and Company and its subconsultant Citylogix to collect high-resolution roadway data across all 235 centerline miles of city streets. The initiative was announced in April and data collection is now underway.

The program uses advanced imaging, LiDAR technology, and 360-degree high-definition cameras to assess pavement conditions with precision, allowing city planners to prioritize repairs based on verified need rather than guesswork. Mayor Chaz Molder said the effort is about investing in Columbia's future by putting the right analytical tools in place to make decisions that will benefit the city for years to come. City Manager Tony Massey added that reliable data and advanced analytics will allow the city to prioritize projects more effectively and extend the life of the roadway system.

The program will produce standardized construction plans, community education materials, and a long-term Pavement Management Plan to guide future budget decisions. For taxpayers, the goal is straightforward: spend smarter, fix the right roads first, and make the infrastructure last longer before costly full replacements are needed.
