COLUMBIA — A long-needed overhaul of the Bear Creek Pike corridor has been formally included in the Tennessee Department of Transportation's 10-Year Project Plan, the City of Columbia announced in April. The project covers State Route 99 from Nashville Highway (SR-6/US-31) to Interstate 65 and is designed to improve safety, traffic flow, and reliable connectivity for residents, businesses, and emergency services.

TDOT has committed up to $180 million toward the project through the Statewide Partnership Program, with construction currently anticipated for 2037. Columbia pledged $1 million annually over 10 years — a $10 million local commitment — to help secure the project's place in the state plan. TDOT Commissioner Will Reid said the city's financial participation played a critical role in elevating the project for consideration. Mayor Chaz Molder described the effort as a long-term, thoughtful approach to addressing real transportation needs while preserving what makes Columbia special.

Bear Creek Pike is a major east-west artery that has struggled to keep pace with Maury County's rapid growth. The project is still more than a decade from breaking ground, but securing a place in TDOT's plan is a hard-won milestone for a corridor that has needed attention for years.
